Subordinate Fish Mediate Aggressiveness Using Recent Contest Information

چکیده

Memorizing dominance relationships can help animals avoid unwinnable subsequent contests. However, when competitive ability changes over time—for example, as a function of condition—it may be adaptive to “forget” these and for subordinates once again enter contests with previously dominant individuals. Here, we examined the behavior pairs male cichlid fish, Julidochromis transcriptus , in repeated separated by different time intervals. We found that taken reach resolution influenced aggressive subordinate toward dominant, longer initial leading higher aggression. Longer intervals between also increased aggression from dominant. These results are consistent increasing uncertainty due ambiguous contest outcomes Our show was necessary resolve larger pairs, suggesting self-assessment strategy, but not mutual assessment strategy. Taken together, individuals appear adaptively lose or ignore gathered social information because they have fighting better body condition. Therefore, conclude losing ignoring unreliable an strategy context relationships.

Male Aggressiveness as Intrasexual Contest 1 Competition in 78 Societies

9 Sexual selection favors traits that increase mating and, thus, reproductive success. Some scholars 10 have suggested that intrasexual selection driven by contest competition has shaped human male 11 aggression. If this is the case, one testable hypothesis is that beliefs and behavior related to male 12 aggression should be more prevalent in societies where the intensity and strength of sexual...

Information Structure in Subordinate and Subordinate-Like Clauses

While information structure has traditionally been viewed as a single partition of information within an utterance, there are opposing views that identify multiple such partitions in an utterance. The existence of alternative proposals raises questions about the notion of information structure and also its relation to discourse structure. Aggressiveness and memory: subordinate crabs present higher memory ability than dominants after an agonistic experience.

A relationship between aggressiveness and memory has been proposed in several studies with different animal species. Here, we study this possibility in the crab Chasmagnathus granulatus, using the context-signal memory model (CSM) that involves an association between the learning context and a visual danger stimulus. Each experiment consisted of an agonistic phase and a memory one. During the f...

A Beauty Contest with Flexible Information Acquisition

This paper studies a beauty-contest coordination game. A continuum of players get payoffs based on the squared distance of their action from an unobserved fundamental state of the world and the average action among all players. Each player receives a signal whose probability distribution conditional on the value of the fundamental is part of their strategy. This flexible information acquisition...

Integrating Personality Research and Animal Contest Theory: Aggressiveness in the Green Swordtail Xiphophorus helleri

Aggression occurs when individuals compete over limiting resources. While theoretical studies have long placed a strong emphasis on context-specificity of aggression, there is increasing recognition that consistent behavioural differences exist among individuals, and that aggressiveness may be an important component of individual personality. Though empirical studies tend to focus on one aspect...
